In Memoriam: Zeb Mayhew Jr.

In Memoriam: Zeb Mayhew Jr.

As a great nephew of Josephine Stewart, last resident owner of Oak Alley Plantation, and a frequent visitor to Oak Alley throughout his childhood, Zeb developed a lifelong devotion to the estate and its preservation. After Mrs. Stewart’s death in 1972, he assumed an increasingly active role in restoring, managing, and interpreting the property when becoming the Foundation’s first full-time Executive Director—a position he faithfully held for almost fifty years.

Under Zeb’s leadership, Oak Alley evolved into one of Louisiana’s most recognized historic destinations. Guided by his unwavering commitment to preservation, education, and hospitality, he oversaw the continued restoration of the estate, expanded the Foundation’s ability to share Oak Alley’s history with visitors from around the world, and helped establish the plantation as an internationally recognized cultural landmark. His vision also led to the thoughtful development of the adjoining hospitality operations, creating an experience that complemented and supported the Foundation’s preservation mission.

Beyond Oak Alley’s gates, Zeb became a respected leader in Louisiana tourism, historic preservation, and economic development. He believed that preserving Louisiana’s heritage required collaboration, and he devoted countless hours to organizations dedicated to strengthening tourism, protecting historic resources, and promoting the River Parishes and the state as a whole. His leadership earned him numerous honors, including the Louisiana Travel Association’s Lifetime Achievement Award.

Equally important was Zeb’s steadfast commitment to protecting the landscape that defines Oak Alley. He was a passionate advocate for preserving the region’s green spaces and worked tirelessly to balance economic growth with the conservation of Louisiana’s natural and historic environments. His efforts reflected a deep belief that the land surrounding Oak Alley was as essential to its story as the mansion itself.

For more than half a century, Zeb Mayhew Jr.’s vision, leadership, and dedication ensured that Oak Alley would not simply endure, but flourish. His legacy lives on in the preservation of this National Historic Landmark and in the countless visitors who continue to experience its history, beauty, and enduring significance.
