Jacques Telesphore Roman and his wife, Celina Pilie Roman, mortgaged a sugar plantation in St. James Parish and forty-eight enslaved people to the Union Bank of Louisiana in exchange for $20,000, or 200 shares. George Milligan accepted the mortgage on behalf of the Union Bank.
